Catching the Light

As we were driving  home yesterday in the early evening we were stunned by the glowing white ahead of us.  We pulled over to the side of the road by a small walnut orchard - in full bloom. We've lived here for 12 years and never once before have we seen this.  It took our breath away.

The sun was low in the sky and made the blossoms glow

Somewhere in the orchard there was a young man walking around taking photos from inside the trees

The most spectacular white

It looks like a good year for walnuts.

What beautiful blossom and photographs. I have not seen walnut blossom on the few walnut trees near where I live, I will look more closely. Thank you for your comments on my blog.

What a lovely scene! I can just imagine how wonderful it would be to walk among the blooming trees! The fragrance must be amazing! I hope the bees were out doing their job for lots of walnuts to gather! xoxo

amazing sea of white! I have never ever seen a walnut tree in blossom. I'm figuring that these are English walnuts, right? When we lived in the country, we had black walnut trees, and they never bloomed.

My grandmother lived in Central California near lots of walnut orchards, but I never got to see them in bloom. All I remember is either winter bare or summer in full leaves. Your book sounds interesting. I'll go over to Amazon to check it out. - Margy

That is an amazing sight! You never think about where things come from until it's brought to your attention. I had no idea walnuts had such delicate blooms.

The original poem is about cherry trees, but I think it is fitting to change it to "walnut" in honor of these trees:

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again;
Take from seventy springs a score -
That only leaves me fifty more

And since, to look at things in bloom,
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodland I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.

Lovely photos of a perfect, irreproducible moment! -BB
