A Day on Lummi Island

Lummi Island is about a 45 minute drive from our house - plus a short 5 minute ferry ride - and it is full of wonderful places to visit.  One of our favorites is the back side of the island - the part that you can't see from Bellingham.  There is lots of driftwood that floats up in the storms - little beach shacks - and birds.

I'm not sure what they use the little shacks for. .  .

But they are really decorated nicely.  .  .

Perhaps with things that wash in from the ocean.  .  .

Or things they gather along the way in their lives.  .  .

They are certainly all very interesting.  .  .

There are often herons feeding in the shallows.  .  .

Looking for a tasty tidbit.  .  .

They will stand and pose for a long time .  .  .

It is a fabulous place to visit - calm, serene and so beautiful.

All the decorations seem quite nautical, so I would guess they were in use at some point. I love to visit places like this with my camera--those places that others don't bother to find. Lovely shots.

As I recall, the beach combing along the coast was wonderful too.

I've often seen the sign on my way south, and wondered....and now I know! What a pretty place that is.

Very pretty! Could they be fishermen's shacks? They remind me of fishermen in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland!
