Ducks and Reflections
The Seasonal Ponds are here again. They appear in the fields when we have heavy rains and disappear when there is less rain. They attract ducks and give great opportunities for photos.

On Friday I took photos of all the American Girl Doll Accessories that I have made this year for the Craft Fair in December. This is a curly scarf. I made them in sets - one for the doll and one for the little girl who owns the doll - in lots of pretty colors. I also made bracelets, flip flops with matching Easter baskets, pumpkin hats and baskets and knitted hats with flower decorations - it has been fun making these all year.

Sometimes This Happens At Birthday Parties
Our oldest daughter had a birthday this past week - she was 49. We had a nice spaghetti dinner (her favorite birthday dinner since she was a little girl - we've had many wonderful years of spaghetti dinners, and she even cooked this dinner and brought it to our house) and I made cupcakes instead of a cake. But we still wanted to put candles on a cake and blow them out - so . . .
Ben and I put all 49 candles on one cupcake. It went pretty well - we did it in secret so no one knew what we were doing until we brought out the cupcake - aflame with 49 candles.
Ben thought it looked like a bonfire.
After our daughter blew out the candles you could see that the heat of the flames had actually melted some of the candles.
I think next birthday it might be better to make a cake instead.

Now to prepare for the next two birthdays - Ben's and our youngest daughter's - just a week apart. Hmmm, maybe cake is a better idea. And I need another box of candles.

Trumpeter Swans and Snow Geese
Two weeks ago the Snow Geese were back - and now the Trumpeter Swans are here, and in bigger numbers than we've ever seen them before.

Swans landing in the corn field. The wing span is 6 feet 1 inch to 8 feet 2inches (185 to 250 cm) and they can weight up to 38 pounds (17.2 kg) .
With the sun behind the Swans I had fabulous lighting on the wings.
In another corn field there was a lot of ice and it held the weight of the swans.
These photos were taken in a field just outside Sedro Woolley - the Snow Geese are the smaller one in the back of the field, with Trumpeter Swans in the front. We've rarely seen both kinds of birds in the same field like this. The sound was fabulous - the loud honking of the swans with the higher, jabbering sound of the Snow Geese.
My new camera - Nikon Coolpix P600 has a shutter lag of only 0.3 seconds - which is fabulous. It lets me get the action picture while it is still happening rather than the longer lag of other cameras which often give you the picture after the action is over. I got some great wing flapping photos.
