We decided to take a drive down to Fir Island in Skagit County to see if any Snow Geese had arrived. It seems a bit early - but with all the snow north of here we hoped we might spot some.
We only saw one small flock - but it was so exciting!!! We followed them for quite a ways until they took off over some hills and we lost them
The sound of Snow Geese is unmistakable and we could hear them calling as they circled back and forth above us!
The clouds and sun came and went - giving us wonderfully different views of them flying by.
We never did see them land - perhaps they flew over to the bay, but it was enough just to have seen some of the first ones to return for the winter. We'll definitely go back and see the huge flocks that overwinter here.
Do you have any special bird flocks that overwinter in your area?
Of course we had to stop at Snow Goose Produce Stand - where they offer "immodest size ice cream cones". We got one to share - Chocolate Truffle. It was more that the two of us could possible eat - and it was the one scoop size - wonder what the two scoop size looks like. We also stocked up on their organic produce - such a great variety, even this time of the year.

Seeing all those Snow Geese must have been an awesome sight. I can just imagine the sound they all make. My goodness, that Chocolate Truffle ice cream looks might good, JoaAnn.
That looks like a pretty large flock. You're reminding me that we've talked about getting back to the Skagit Valley early next year. We can't decide whether to go for the migrating birds or the daffodils and tulips. (Decisions, decisions!) Your bird shots make me lean toward an early visit. We're doing some traveling in November -- it may take a while to recover from those expenses.
Chocolate truffle ice cream sounds and looks delicious.
I'm hoping we get a few snowy owls here this year. They don't come often but we may be due for a few visitors, I hope. And, of course, we have our usual trumpeter swans -- much smaller flocks than any of the birds you see.

Always fun to see the Snow Geese returning. The earliest I had seen them was last year at Oct 3. They are early this year

I wish the snow geese came to the island more frequently - we see them only occasionally and I always love seeing them. Glad you saw them - and enjoyed the ice cream.
Sounds like a lovely day. I'd be happy to see just one snow goose!
One thing I enjoyed about living along an eastern flyway, was the migration sounds and patterns of flocks of birds. Yes, geese announced their passage so that they were hard to miss. Smaller birds were fun too. I remember my young daughter looking out the window and saying, "Look Mom, it's raining birds"!
