We love visiting the islands off the coast of N. Washington. One of our favorites is Lummi Island. It is about a 45 minute drive down Lummi Peninsula (named for the Native American Lummi Tribe that inhabits the peninsula) to the small ferry dock. Just a 5 minute ride across the channel and we are there. You pay your fare on the trip to the island - and it is round trip so no bothering with tickets on the way back.
There was so much to see that I will do a couple posts about the island.
This is the small ferry - it holds about 20 cars and some walk-on passengers. Some of the people that live on Lummi Island have cars on the island and on the mainland - it saves on the cost of the ferry ride if they walk on. There were several people pulling carts loaded with groceries and such.
The trim on the ferry (upper left photos) is painted in Seattle Seahawks colors - for those not familiar with them - the Seahawks are the "local" football team and went to the SuperBowl two years in a row - and there is Seahawks mania everywhere - even on the state ferries.
We started our day on the island with a driving tour - there are many fine old houses - this one is empty but some new work had been done on the porch so I'm hoping it is being restored.
The lawn is mowed and the heather down the front walk looked well tended.
A rose arbor leads to the walkway up to the house - no steps up to the porch yet - but maybe they are next to be built.
The views from both sides of the island are amazing. You can see up the Strait of Georgia

This may be my all time favorite photo of Mt. Baker - to the right are The Sisters - can you imagine waking up to the view every morning?
And of course we had to look for eagles. We only found one, on the back side of the island. Usually there are several there, but that day just that one. In the middle of the photo - on the dead tree.
The eagle was very patient - sat there for a couple hours - until we came back after lunch.

Lummi Island is a gorgeous spot! Such beautiful views. Love the eagle. I always enjoy riding the ferries when I visit the Pacific Nw. Happy Monday!

I remember the Seahawks in the two Super Bowls. I was cheering for them to win both times!- not that I understand football or anything, just that there was a player who had the cutest personality...wish I could remember his name!
We live 'just down the road' in Kirkland and keep saying we must get there one day and haven't yet made it. Thanks for the post.

The island looks a beautiful place with some wonderful scenery. I'd really like to visit your part of the USA someday.
I am amazed the view goes all the way to The Sisters. From Tokyo high-rises it is hard to see Mt Fuji, let alone the Japanese alps in the background ... and you have to get up early to beat the haze that sets in.
I wasn't aware of the island or tribe but certainly do like the view in the distance. It would inspire one to be an artist I should think.

JoAnn, I know I've said this before but it bears repeating. You live in such a beautiful area. The ferries just fascinate me. I wish I could ride on one every day. When we were visiting WA several years ago, we spent practically one whole day just riding back and forth!. That is a beautiful old house and it does look like someone is fixing it up. Friends of Tim and Tami's bought property on one of the islands and are planning to move there once they get their kids through school. I just love your camera and how you were able to get that shot of the eagle and still have it so clear. New camera is on my bucket list for sure..Happy Wednesday..Judy
Oh, yes! I can see why that might be your all time favorite of Baker. That shot deserves a frame and a place on the wall! (And if it's any consolation chances are that the view isn't that clear every day.) Very nice eagle shots, as usual.
