And On - Washington Park

One of our favorite picnic destinations is Washington Park, in Anacortes. It is a city park and has boat launches, picnic areas, swimming beaches and miles of driving/walking trails that follow along the cliffs overlooking the San Juan Islands.

All sorts of boats go up and down the channel.
A whale watching boat coming back to the harbor after a day of searching for whales.
We stopped at Gere-A-Deli and got sandwiches and Cole Slaw for our picnic.

Don taking a stroll after lunch.  We have had such a dry summer that everything is parched and dry.  Usually this grass would be very green.
The Washington State Ferries come and go to the San Juan Islands.  The ferry system is the largest in the world, both in number of ferries and miles traveled each year.
Often there are several ferries passing in the channel
Closer
Even with each other
And continuing on - since they can load cars from either end and have pilot houses on both ends it is hard to tell which is coming and which is going.
A man came along on his peddle kayak.  He had to have come a long ways to get to where he is, and he was peddling against the current.  If he doesn't head home before the tide changes he'll be peddling against the current again.
The seagulls came flocking to one area - they had found a school of small fish to feast on  Notice the long Cormorant in the middle of the photo.
And a diving duck just went under
There he is - back again (upper left). They were too far away for me to identify the duck.

Settling down after the feast.

What a wonderful place to picnic. I think I'd like to go for a ride on the ferry.

Such interesting photographs because I blog with Margaret (Thousand Flower) who lives in the San Juan Islands. Last year they visited the UK and they came and spent the night here with us. It was lovely to meet them.

I want to go there for a picnic too! Through your pictures I can imagine myself being there enjoying a picnic lunch while watching the birds scampering about the water and the ferries floating by in either direction. I think I would love to go on the whale watching boat for a day cruise too.

The water is so beautiful and blue. I know you enjoyed being there and I hope you have a nice weekend. It's rained enough here to give us a green summer. Sweet hugs, Diane
