The old silos are no longer used on farms in our area - the NW corner of Washington State. They still stand - some in better condition than others - but still standing.
A wooden silo with iron bands to make it secure and a metal roof. The barn is fading fast.
This silo is covered in ivy. The barn is now being refurbished - slowly - by the new owners.
The side of the barn used to be covered completely in ivy also.

The barn behind the smaller metal silos has almost completely collapsed.
The entire farm has been badly neglected - though it is still being farmed, they take no pride in their property.

And an old cement silo with modern, large bales of hay standing in front, a red wagon left beside the hay.

Why don't they use silos any more? How do they store grain on dairies these days, or do they only feed hay products? - Margy
A nice selection of barns to look at. That ivy looks like it has plans to conquer an empire! Neighbors allowed ivy to grow over their septic mounds and have lived to regret it (it clogged up the whole system and it was very difficult to remove and repair the system).
(We haven't had measurable rain for a week or more. I'm not sure what direction yours has come from. We're often shielded from the west by the Olympics.)

...JoAnn, I also enjoy silos, a relic of the past here too. About the only ones who use silos are small Amish farmers. Thanks so much for being here thus week, please stop again.
I cannot imagine living - and working - with so much dereliction all around. The ivy surrounding the silo looks almost otherworldly, and I bet will be quite a job to remove!

A fair number of old unused silos around here too.
When farms kept grain in silos to feed their own cattle, they were kept in better condition. I wonder if many of those farms are now selling off their feed. I remember riding in the hopper of a columbine to keep the grain from piling over the top. I wonder how many kids do those jobs today.
