Weekend Barbecue

Last weekend - or the weekend before - or sometime recently we had a family barbecue.  It was rainy all weekend and so we figured on eating indoors - but as we began to cook the meat it cleared up and was pleasant enough to sit on the deck and chat while the meat cooked - but it was all set up indoors so we ate there.

I have several dishes that are shaped like vegetables - and barbecues are a fun time to use them.
Beginning to set the table - we used square, emerald green Depression Glass plates - large for the adults - smaller for the kids.  I got out the summer glasses - these are thick glass with decals on them.  They have a ridge down inside the rim where a paper lid was.  They originally came with cottage cheese in them.  I have parts of several sets.  Today it was fruit decals.
You can see the rim inside the glasses better in this shot.
The three section watermelon dish was for pickles and olives - and I forgot to take pictures of most of the food once it was dished up - again!
Two "new" pairs of Salt and Pepper shakers - I've been looking for some of these for picnics and barbecues and found them both on the same outing to yard sales.
Aren't they just the cutest things?  From the 50s - and my childhood
Both sets are about 2 1 /2 inches tall
Chilled asparagus went on the celery dish - and guacamole in the radish dish - and of course watermelon in the watermelon basket.

I found these little Hawaiian Shirt plates at Value Village - which is now called Savers - in the wintertime.  At first I put 4 in the shopping cart - and then went back around and got four more before anyone else could get them all - and there were still six left for someone else.  Eight seems to be the most we ever need.
They are just so cute - we used them for side dishes, olives, pickles, guacamole, etc.  But they could also be used for dessert.

I love the colors!
Keeping with the watermelon theme - napkin rings that I made last summer.  The napkins I found at a privately owned thrift store - 4/1.00 - so I got both colors
Almost ready to dish up the food - I will one day remember to take pictures of it - I think.
My new yellow silverware - it is perfect for summer picnics and barbecues.
It is so sunny and bright - it just makes me smile.
Do you have special dishes that you  like to use for picnics and barbecues?

Well, I have plates in the shape of fish and crabs but I think yours are a whole lot more useful.

Just another thing to love about summer - a table of bright, happy, whimsical dishes and every pretty color you can get your hands on!

I am way behind on visiting...love this post, JoAnn! Savers is by far my most favorite store...wish I lived near enough to go daily. The 3 I haunt have some of the best deals. I would have picked those cute little shirt dishes up, too. They are perfect for this time of year. Love your yellow flatware, so cheery.
I have watermelon napkin rings, but never seem to get around to using them...maybe because I detest melon/cantalope of any ilk!
Have a great weekend.

This a wonderful fun summer post. I am in love with those cute Hawaiian shirt plates, they would fit right in with any number of summer themes. Your new yellow flatware is perfect for this table with the shirt plates and napkins and veggie plates and the watermelon bowl, just perfect. I love plaid any time of the year, but most especially for summer cookouts. Plaid just says picnic to me.
