Saturday's Critters

I haven't been on my blog much this summer - but I've been busy - we had a wonderful visit from our son and his family from West Virginia in June - that was a good start to the summer.  We've done a lot of bird watching, seems to be a particularly good year for birds.

Thank you to those who were concerned when I was absent from my blog - thanks for the notes and the concern.

We spent a day at Wylie Slough on Fir Island - near Conway, WA.  The Shorebirds are beginning to migrate in and it was a wonderful day.  The path is flat and well maintained, lots of good parking and lots of birds.
There were Lesser Yellowlegs and Greater Yellowlegs
Lots of them standing on logs floating in the slough as the tide came in.

Plenty of flapping about - and knocking others into the slough
 And ruffled feathers
 Flying in and landing

Trying to get the best spot

Lots of leg stretching and wing exercise

 A couple squabbles

So many reflections in the water of the slough

And then they all flew up when a Great Blue Heron flew over
And then settled back onto the logs
It was indeed a great day.

I have been enjoying "Birds of the Pacific Northwest" as one of the best birding books I have read. Some if my daughter-in-law's photos were published in that book and yours are every bit as outstanding. Though most of out migrants come from Asia, it was interesting to compare that book with my local books and see how many are on our list too.
Isn't family time just the best!

Wonderful photo of the yellowlegs on the log. I spotted some lesser yellowlegs for the past couple of weeks, but they are just passing through our area. Happy birding.

We've been "busy" living up at the cabin all summer. Just came to Bellingham for a quick visit this week (eclipse and all). Coming down the lake one day I thought I saw a canoe in the distance. Our lake is part of a canoe route through the area. As we got closer it was a floating log with seagull sitting on top. Guess we wouldn't want to hit that either. - Margy

Brilliant set of photos, never seen so many Yelloow legs togeather, and interesting for me as a Brit. to see both species to compare.
Thanks and take care, Gordon.

These are beautiful birds and you got some wonderful shots of them, including some nice reflections. I'm impressed with their one-legged balance. I don't think I'm up to that, even with my regular exercises!
