Today was a fantastic day. There were clouds, sun, rain, hail and the moon, almost full tonight.
We drove down country roads - up to Sumas, WA on the Canadian border and then to Everson and every place in between.
The clouds were thick and dark - the barns bright and beautiful against the sky
Rain in the distance - those hills are British Columbia, Canada. I fear that hay on the ground is going to get very wet.
Some sun breaks - but they don't last long as the clouds thicken
The silo tops shine against the dark clouds. Old barn and silos on the left - new red barn and very old silo on the right
And then the rain begins
And this is with the windshield wipers going at full speed.
In about 20 minutes the rain was gone - but not before it brought some strong hail with it. And the skies began to clear.
Puffy white clouds against a blue sky, and a field where the hay had recently been cut.
Did you know that the flat bottoms of the clouds are from warm columns of air pushing into the cold air above and clouds form atop the warm air columns. I like to think of the clouds as walking down steps across the countryside.
A field of very wet hay, now basking in the bright sunshine
A little barn, right in the middle of a small town - blue skies and puffy clouds behind it.
And then at home tonight the almost full moon.
Interesting photographs JoAnn - they are all white which seems unusual to me. As to that lying grass, I would guess it is for silage rather than for hay and although it would get wet through in that absolute deluge, providing it was left untouched that sun would dry it out fairly soon. This time of year, certainly in the UK, much of the cut grass is put into clamps rather than bales, and although it does need to be dry it is not quite so important as if it is actually baled. Hope this makes sense.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome day and wonderful series of images from your ride. Great collection of barns! And I love the moon capture. Happy Sunday, enjoy your new week ahead!
ReplyDeleteHi JoAnn! Lovely photos of the rain! You must have a really good camera.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your ride with us.
Take care!
Arlette
You got to enjoy a little bit of everything. I am surprised some days at how quickly the weather changes.
ReplyDeleteDid you see me waving at you from the Canadian hills? Yup that was me...hehehe
A beautiful collection of barns this week...love the shots that show the "whole" farms. One of my favorite scents is freshly mown hay!
ReplyDeleteWayne and I were driving to the airport in Arizona at 4:00 a.m. this morning and saw how full the moon was. Wayne told be there will be a lunar eclipse tonight. Here's a link. http://time.com/4050491/super-moon-eclipse-live-stream-watch/ - Margy
ReplyDeleteMan oh man do you ever have a great collection of barns. I'm glad to see that you are getting some rain. Thanks JoAnn for sharing your barn tour and I hope that you will be able to share some more. Tom The Backroads Traveller
ReplyDeleteSuch an interesting collection of barn and cloud photos! There is so much clarity in your photos even the long distance ones. It is a treat to see rain for those of us experiencing drought conditions. Would love to see more barn photos. My "inner farmer" wants a visual break from the subarbs. Have a nice week!
ReplyDeleteWow! You caught some very beautiful scenes! Despite the rain and hail it looks like you had a very good day.
ReplyDelete(I've been enjoying the "blood moon" and eclipse for over an hour now. Quite a sight to behold! We've got beautifully clear skies tonight.)
Beautiful photos of the barns and farms. Looks like a good soaking rain! It's been beautiful weather here but I guess Wednesday we are in for some heavy rains and strong winds. Pam
