Five on Willy Nilly Friday - Anniversary

Friday fun again - and today is a very special Friday.  It is our 51st anniversary.  We have fun surprises planned for each other (I've seen gift bags going in and out lately) and dinner at a nice steak house.

1. The leaves are beginning to change color - soon the trees behind this Vine Maple will be bright yellow.  We get glorious autumn colors here in the Pacific Northwest

 2. A funny sign.  No - not acupuncture for little hamsters - the residents of Bellingham are called Bellinghamsters - clever use of that for a business name.

 3. Some critters - I really  enjoy finding critters to photograph (bet you didn't know that about me)

 A Cormorant sitting on a piling by the ferry dock on Lummi Island.  The noise of the ferry didn't seem to disturb it in the least. The feather pattern is beautiful.

And what kind of critter is this?  A light up christmas pig high in a tree in the summer?  Merry Oinkmas!

4. The last of the summer nasturtiums in the morning light

 5. And a beaver lodge in a small local lake.  One time we were lucky enough to see A Great Blue Heron perched on the beaver lodge

 6. And just because it is our anniversary I'll add a 6th item.  This is us 51 years ago today.

Summer Scavenger Hunt Part Two

Here is the last of the summer scavenger hunt  - this has been fun.


1. A bouquet of flowers

When our grandson Donnie was visiting in July he went to the store with his daddy - and when they came back he came running up the deck with a bouquet - and said, "Grammy, I love you so much, I bought you flowers and I bought milk for myself." 

3. A person walking a dog

4. People playing a board game or card game  - substituting Alternative A: People eating outside

 Nothing better than a treat from the ice cream truck

 A picnic in the park with our family

9. A tent

By the roadside - the person living here even kept chickens.

10. A college or university -  substitute Alternative B: Someone holding an umbrella

 It was hard to find an umbrella this summer - we had so little rain - this is looking down on a street in Seattle from our room high up in the Crowne Plaza Hotel 

And here is a better summer umbrella - an umbrella made of dolphins - in a parade.

13. A merry-go-round or carousel

15. A flag pole with at least three flags on it

I looked and looked - couldn't find one flag pole with three flags - but here are three flag poles with one flag each - Canadian flag, U.S. flag and Washington State flag. This is the front of the Alaska Ferry Terminal in Bellingham. This is where Don and I go on many Friday evenings with our picnic to sit and watch the cars load and the ferry depart.  

Our oldest daughter's wedding was held (2001) in the wonderful upper story of the glass bubble - it was spectacular.

19. A ticket booth - substituting Alternative C: A rocking chair

Wednesday Wee Ones

It is nearing time for Thanksgiving, October 12 in Canada and November 26 in the U.S. so Sally Jo has decided to start some cooking early.  She has found her perfect outfit and just couldn't wait to try it out.

Take a turkey, stuff it fat,

Some of this and some of that.

Get some turnips, peel them well.

Cook a big squash in its shell.

Now potatoes, big and white,

Mash till they are soft and light.

Cranberries, so tart and sweet,

With the turkey we must eat.

Pickles-yes-and then, oh my!

For a dessert a pumpkin pie,

Golden brown and spicy sweet.

What a fine Thanksgiving treat!

 Her dress of a Flint Corn print and a subtle giraffe print is perfect for the holidays.

 Add a basketweave apron and Sally Jo is ready to prepare a Thanksgiving feast

 Oh of course, a neat little scarf to hold her hair back while cooking - it matches the skirt on her dress

 So it is off to the garden to gather some fresh vegetables, and then to the market.

 She'll use the potholders that match her outfit - just the thing for hot pans

 Baking is a good way to start - hmmm, pumpkin bars sound good, don't they?

And they can be served with or without the frosting.  A dollop of whipped cream might be good too.

 So many things to cook - potatoes to boil for mashing, Brussells Sprouts, it all smells so good

 Homemade cranberry sauce, with cranberries picked fresh from Sally Jo's bushes

 Muffins would be good too, corn muffins?  Or shall we have blueberry muffins?

 It is a good thing she has potholders.

 And now time to set the table - the food is ready -

 Dinner is served

 And then, time to clean up and wash the dishes

And now Sally Jo sits down and enjoys a good book and a cup of tea - the end

The Good, The Random, The Fun

It's a beautiful sunny day - good for baking, and sewing and taking some photos.  So let's see what else is happening around here.

The Good

 Berries ripening- these were under a shade fabric - not sure why they grow them that way, but there were fields and fields of them.  All the other berries ripened in the spring and early summer, these are just beginning to ripen in mid September 

The Random

 Horses are always fun

 Especially when they come over to chat

 And more Fun - this is in front of a local cafe. It used to be a patchwork pig - now it is a big chicken
