A Brown Headed Cowbird and baby - getting a ride on the horse. This is unusual, as the Cowbirds lay their eggs in the nests of other species and the babies are raised by the host bird.

What beautiful animals! I have always been intimidated by horses. I once owned a Pinto who was a wild thing, and might have influenced how I feel about them. Although our pony Goldberry was a dear, very temperamental but such a little worker, and a great pet for our boys.
Maybe that cowbird wanted to experience parenthood directly!

I am not familiar with cowbirds. We have several varieties of cuckoos that lay their eggs in other bird's nests. The little cuckoo uses bush warbler nests. My bird book says that 40% use other bird's nests. I wonder if maybe some actually raise their own young. Now you've got my curiosity up. Maybe these are "horse birds" and that makes them different ... or they couldn't find any cows...
I've always loved horses. I've seen two cowbirds at the cabin. They must not like our water world much. We hope to get home as soon as the border quarantine requirement is released. - Margy
It's always a pleasure to watch horses, even when they're just eating. They're such beautiful animals.
