It is always a good day when we find large flocks of Trumpeter Swans and Snow Geese on Fir Island.
Two weeks ago we came upon this gigantic flock of Swans - usually they are spread out over the fields, while the Snow Geese tend to swarm in tighter groups.
There were hundreds, maybe thousands of the Trumpeter Swans across a large field, in much tighter groups than usual.
They spread out - and mingled with large flocks of the Snow Geese. All intent on finding something to eat.
And look what they found.
The farmer had dumped large mounds of red and yellow potatoes in piles all along the field.
The Swans were especially interested in the potatoes.
The farmer made big mounds and long piles of potatoes. The farmers are having trouble selling their potatoes in other countries this year, and many crops are going to waste.
We stayed and watched for well over 45 minutes - and only one other car drove by, and they didn't stop to watch. No one else seemed to know that all those birds were there, eating potatoes.
The Trumpeter Swans and Snow Geese are certainly having a feast.
They want some of the plentiful potatoes.
I can just imagine the trumpetting of those glorious swans, JoAnn! They are a sight to behold. Your photos have captured them splendidly. Hoping you enjoy a beautiful new year, lovely lady.♥
ReplyDeleteBad for the farmers, but good for the geese and swans. I've heard some farmers are paid to plant fields to feed the birds in the off season, but I'm not sure about that. - Margy
ReplyDeleteSpuds for everybody!
ReplyDeleteThat really is awe inspiring! Just amazing to see so many. How nice for them to have plenty to eat too. We are seeing big flocks of Sandhill Cranes fly over...less than a hundred at a time but still amazing. Happy New year sweet friend! Looking forward to more posts and catching up with you soon! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sight JoAnn - obviously the word got out that there was food at Farmer ? place!
ReplyDeleteThe Swans will have noted this happening in their GPS so you might see them there next year - let us know if you do!
Wonderful photos.
I’m so glad you stopped and enjoyed the moment - nature at her best!

That's a huge number of trumpeter swans. The potatoes will have made quite the feast for them. What a sight to see.
ReplyDeleteI would have been in 7th heaven to see all these...what fun! And I LOVE your header photo!
