I split a little pumpkin in half and put it out in a flower box on the deck - the Stellar's Jays loved it
There were often two or three trying to get at the seeds
Hurry it up - will ya?
Three
And in the back yard - a flock of Bushtits took over a suet feeder
Tiny little things - they made a serious dent in the suet cake
With some help from a chickadee or two
It was good bird day
Hello, it was a great birdie day. It is a neat idea to feed the birds right from a pumpkin. I love the Stellar Jays. I have never seen the Bushtits. They are sweet birds. Great post. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeletePS, I deleted the other link and thanks for the comment on my blog.
...your Stellar's Jay is 'stellar.'
ReplyDeleteO MY!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful photos!! Stunning!!Thanks so much for visiting!!
Hugs,
Debbie
Wow! That many little birds could demolish a suet cake quickly!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos of the Jays
Cool pictures of the old blue bully birds. Good idea with the pumpkin.

Lovely critters!
ReplyDeleteYou take such good care of all your pretty birds. Love the Jays poses! Enjoy your weekend! Sweet hugs, Diane
ReplyDeleteWow, those Stellars Jays are beautiful! Never seen one up here, only regular blue jays.
ReplyDeleteAfter a long absence (probably because I took the bird feeders down) the Stellar Jay came back yesterday. I'd put out a little cup of seeds on the ground for the Song Sparrow and he came and devoured the contents. How did he know it was there? - Margy
ReplyDeleteWhat fantastic shots of the Steller's Jays! They seem to have loved the pumpkin! Cute bushtits and chickadees as well.
ReplyDeleteOh, my, he is a handsome bird! so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a great day for birds at your house, with some wonderful shots to prove it! We had lots of jays in California; not many at all around here. I never would have thought of offering pumpkin to the birds. You clearly gave the jays a nice feast.
ReplyDeleteI love the rich blue colours of those Stellar Jays. Don't see them in the east.
ReplyDeleteSuper beautiful bird photos JoAnn - not familiar with bushtits but notice our chickadees are back and busy at the feeders!
ReplyDeleteLove how your jays - different from ours and such a beautiful deeper blue - are enjoying the pumpkins. I have several still so may put one out and see if the jays like it.
Regarding suet cakes - think something big (raccoon perhaps) is coming at night and eating the entire cake in one go - getting expensive so may have to stop this offering for a while!

Love your idea of splitting the pumpkin for the birds! I am going to do that! Usually I throw them out for the deer that pass through our yard. I enjoyed your post! Beautiful pictures!
ReplyDeleteI would say it was a beautiful bird day. Love those Stellar Jays. What a pretty blue they and those stripes on the feathers, just so pretty.
ReplyDeleteJoAnn - as I scrolled down the Jay pictures, it was wow. Wow. WOW. Each one more precious. I never realized that they have a light blue "v" over the eyes - thank goodness for your close-ups. Well done to catch them with the seed in beak - awesome!
ReplyDeleteThose Jays have such great expressions. I have a suet feeder like that and just filled it this week. The best pictures I can get is putting a glass of juice on the garden wall ... or skewing an apple or orange half on a board of nails.
ReplyDeleteThose used to attract Japanese jays when we lived in an area with more tree cover.
