Little Mountain

There is a park in Mt. Vernon, WA called Little Mountain Park - and it is on - a little mountain, just under 1,000 feet tall.  The mountain just pops up on the edge of town - a winding, wooded road takes you up to the top and magnificent views.  There are picnic tables, a viewing platform and benches,  as well as walking paths that go up or down the mountain - depending on where you start.
From the viewing platform you can see south towards Conway
With farms small and large

Lush farm fields

Farms and greenhouses
Tree farms
Trains passing through the Skagit Valley

And to the north and west you catch glimpses of Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands

The views are spectacular - and there are picnic tables spread out near the generous parking area.  The trail the the viewing platform is well maintained and easily accessible to most handicapped people - it is just a few yards long and only a little sloped.

It was a wonderfully warm day - a nice breeze on top of the little mountain - families picnicking - biker riders coming and going and hikers exploring the area.  Take a right turn off Blackburn Road to Little Mountain Rd and follow the winding road to the top - or park and walk up the hiking paths - a great find, right in town.

Be sure you bring your picnic for a wonderful outing, and a couple folding lawn chairs would be nice too, as there is only one bench for viewing and it is a bit far back from the good views.
