Field of Herons

It is almost dark - we are in search of an elusive flock of shore birds - just one more road - one more look - and look what we found
First - one heron, sitting beside the road - still as can be
And then two more Great Blue Herons - in the grasses of a wetlands near the approach to Samish Island - it is getting darker - harder to see them and harder to get photos.
Another one - walking the other way past the one in the deep grass.
One more by the blackberry vines.  There were others that were farther out and it was getting too dark for them to show up on photos.
Then another
And three more
Closer to the road - a better shot of the next one
One nearby with a nifty feather on the back of its head
Two more - looking for one last meal before dark
A little scuffle - someone got a bit too close

Waiting.   As it grew darker we kept counting - we saw a total of 32 Great Blue Herons - what excitement.  There are one or two rookeries nearby - we will certainly return and look for herons again.

Hello JoAnn, wonderful post on the GB Herons. I enjoyed the photos, it is great seeing so many together. The rookery nearby would be a cool sight too. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, have a great weekend!

How exciting! I don't think I've ever seen so many at one time. Wonderful photos. I walk in the evenings now and it's hard with the low light. Hugs, Diane

Isn't that fun!

Sorry the shore birds didn't show up. I saw more on Camano Island but not as many. They were down Driftwood shores. I think I know where you saw the Heron--maybe not--but the field on the left just before you make the slight left up to Samish Island itself. Maybe? I saw bunches last year but not this year. So Kudos to you.

That's an amazing sight. 32 herons! Wow! That "one more road" certainly paid off this time round.

We have Black-crowned Night herons here ... almost a smaller version, but they hold so still that they often blend in with the grasses and bushes.

Whoever named these "Blue Herons" had no lack of eyesight! They are brilliant! And how much fun for you and Don to sit patiently waiting for them - and be rewarded in multiples!

I haven't seen the heron up at the cabin yet this year. Wonder if it's still using our area for nesting. - Margy
