Herons

We see a lot of herons in this area - there are several rookeries and lots of ponds, lakes, rivers, streams and of course, the ocean that provide food for the herons.  Today's photos are all herons - mostly close-ups that I've gathered while on our rides through the countryside.

Ruffled feathers on a windy day
Unruffled
Hiding among the greenery
Puffed up on a chilly day
Diving near the shore - lunch time
In an orchard - hurrying to get away
No one can see me down here
Even on a barn roof

In the swamp
On the beach

  8. We often see herons along the grassy shoulder of Highway 99 on the way to and from Vancouver. There are moist areas and small creeks along the way that they must use for fishing and hunting food. - Margy

  9. I especially liked the last picture. we have Black-Crowned Night Herons here and they are a lot smaller. During the day they are often nestled in the tree branches.
