This year we served cheese and crackers, snacks and soups.
The table is set using my green and red plaid tablecloth - and we always use the Holly dishes that I've collected over the years. The first piece of Holly was purchases in West Bend, Wisconsin in the late 60s, when it was a brand new product. Now these Holly dishes are considered antiques.
The train centerpiece is one I painted at our weekly ceramics group in California. The three cars are candy dishes and always carry a cargo of M&Ms. Our kids and grandsons can't wait for the cargo to be uploaded each year.
The holly glasses were purchased at Woolworth Dime Store in the 80s - all the Woolworths that we ever shopped at are now closed. I loved that store. The soup bar included Macaroni and Cheese soup, Bratwurst Vegetable Soup and Corn Chowder
Toppings for the soups - croutons, shredded cheese, bacon and green onions
It was a wonderful evening - full of fun and good food - Allll Aboooooard!
What a lovely idea JoAnn - and one I may copy next year!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely idea JoAnn and one I may well copy next time I have a party. Soup is so easy to make and so appreciated in winter.
ReplyDeleteLovely table setting and the train is cute.. I love the idea of soup and the toppings! Looks yummy!
ReplyDeleteIt's never too late for Christmas Eve photos! Everything looks wonderful and that soup bar is a terrific idea.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of red plaid for Christmas. And your holly plates are wonderful! Woolworth's is such a happy memory for me. My mother would take us downtown on the bus and that would be our first stop. I remember the wooden floors, the outlay of toys - especially the doll accessories I was interested in - and the lunch counter.
ReplyDeleteI think your soup bar idea is an excellent one and, like your first commenter, I may have to copy it next year!
Woolworths! Our Woolworths had a little lunch bar in it. When kids from the high school would eat lunch there. What great memories. It had HUGH black and white photographs of the blimps in the clouds. The blimps were from Lakehurst Naval Air Station which was about 6 miles west.
ReplyDeleteYour soup bar looks wonderful!
I just came here from Josephina Ballerina. I have some of those Holly dishes too! They came to me from my mother in law. But you have some pieces that I don't have. Aren't they so cute and festive! When we have a get together, we have various cheeses and crackers and sometimes soups too. Isn't it fun!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a designer meal to me. Yummmmm!
ReplyDeleteThe train is such a fun centerpiece and looks like hubby is a wonderful cook! Love the holly plates, too! This is a beautiful tradition....wish I lived close by! Sweet hugs, Diane
ReplyDeleteOuch! So many of the things I know are being called "antiques" now.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful table, and a wonderful meal!
I too hate to see Woolworth's gone. Somehow all the Targets and Walmarts won't replace it.
Your Christmas Eve Buffet is beautiful. The most beautiful part of this table is the memories that your family has of sharing so many holidays gathered together to share a meal in celebration of the birth of the Christ child. Priceless and precious.
ReplyDeleteI love the train. What a special memory for your children and now your grandchildren. I wish the shop where I took my ceramics classes would have had the greenware to make this set of candy dishes. I know I would have enjoyed making this wonderfully fun set. The soup bar is a brilliant idea, I love the way you have it set up with all the garnishments.
The holly plates are my favorite for Christmas, they look very pretty with the tartan plaid tablecloth. Double ouch on the holly plates being considered antiques now. Kind of makes you think doesn't it?
