Flowering Tree?

In the spring I'm always on the look-out for flowering trees.  Spotting this one on a farm I just had to get a picture of it - wait - what is that?

Not flowers - many kinds of lichen
Branches are almost completely covered in lichen
I'd like to go back later in the spring and see if there are any flowers or leaves at all on this tree.

  1. I have never seen a tree covered like that unless it was lying on the ground in the middle of the woods and in deep shade. Very strange indeed! But it does look like a flowering tree from a distance in the first picture.

  2. That is awesome looking! The tree is sort of shaped like an apple tree...maybe lichen apples! LOL

  3. How unique! It will be interesting to see if it ever does sprout leaves. It's really covered.

  4. Some of our Apple trees are covered with Lichen---the older ones. I don't really lichen lichen. Remember to show this one when and if it flowers out. MB

  5. I'm guessing this isn't the healthiest of trees but it looks like there is some fresh wood on it - for now. I hope you'll go back later to see if it shows signs of other life!
