Male Mallard in a puddle in a horse pasture. We have a lot of waterfowl in this area - the most abundant seems to be the Mallards. They migrate here in mid to late winter and have begun making their nests.
He is a very handsome drake - isn't that the most gorgeous shade of green on his neck and head? Even though they are the most abundant species of duck on earth, found everywhere, they still are wonderful to watch. Where is the rather dowdy Ms. Mallard - she better come out, come out from wherever she's hiding before he's taken by another!
After my granddaughter's graduation ceremony, we went out to a restaurant that had a big pond outside and Leia bought an ice cream cone filled with fish food. When she got to the water, she was spotted by some very savvy mallards. Those fish hardly got a single morsel! (They were huge carp but not nearly as fast as those mallards!)
Handsome guy! We have a pair of ducks visiting a small seasonal pond in our backyard these days. The pond disappears steadily as the rain tapers off, but they still like to call it home for a little while.
