Rock Wall

The houses in our area are built on hills and gullies - slopes and slants - ups and downs, and since land is precious, the houses are often built in these areas, there isn't much level ground to build on.  So we need rock walls - lots of rock walls.  The new rock walls are dry-built - and they use big machinery to lift the boulders in place.  This old rock wall was probably built by hand.

It helps to level out a very slanted yard

The rock placement makes interesting designs

And a dandelion in the rocks - you know how I love the dandelions

It must have taken a lot of work to gather all these rocks - and to lift them into place.

I like rock walls too, and there are plenty of them up here. They gather moss and succulents in every nook and cranny and add wonderful interest to the landscape.

When you consider the work involved in building THESE, and compare that to the pyramids and other unsolved mysteries ( how did that happen back then ) it just makes for brain fodder :)

This reminds me of the poem by Robert Fox, "Mending Wall".

I hadn't thought til now about the work that must go into something like this. Those rocks look not only heavy, but sharp-edged, too. Hard work!
