Sitting at my desk the other day I looked up - and here was this find fellow. Don was in the living room so he ran for my camera (it is usually in my pocket, but not this time) and I got about 25 shots before he flew off. He was about 15 feet from where I was sitting. He was eating from the suet feeder that is attached to the end of the grandsons' swingset. I just couldn't believe my eyes. I've seen about four of these Pileated Woodpeckers in my life - and never this close.
It was an amazing experience - I don't think I took a breathe all the time I was taking the pictures.

Gorgeous shot! Lucky you! I've never seen a pileated woodpecker "in the feather" much less been able to take a shot like this. A treat to see!
ReplyDeletegreat photo. I don't think I'd see one of those around here! Enjoy your Sunday..;j
ReplyDeleteGreat photo! You are so lucky to get so close! We have pileated woodpeckers, too, but I have never been able to get such a great shot!
ReplyDeleteFabulous pic - what a great opportunity!
ReplyDeleteHow awesome!! I've been seeing a woodpecker around our place, but not one like this.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely fabulous Jo...gives me goosebumps as it is a special shot to capture! ~Lili
ReplyDeleteOh!! Isn't he a handsome fellow!! We have his little cousins (Flickers) living here in our yard. Naughty little things pecked a couple of holes in the siding of our house!! Hey ! Go peck on the trees, not our house!
ReplyDeleteWow, I've never seen a woodpecker in person. Very cute indeed. When I lived in Pennsylvannia a few years back, one used to peck occassionally at the side of our house...real loud. I never got the chance to see him, though. Great opportunity you had, and steady hands to take the shot. Bravo!
