Weekly Top Shot # 19 - Ski or Sit a While

Driving along the Mt. Baker hiway there is a place where vendors in the summer set up stands for flowers and for fruit and vegetables. On romantic holidays you will see a vendor out there, rain or shine, with bouquets of roses. But this is the most interesting vendor we've seen so far, and clever too. Everything is made out of old skis. His overhead isn't much, he said people are often happy to have him take their old skis off their hands so they don't have to dispose of them. The chairs are comfy, besides being bright and cheery.

Your Sunday Best - Hello Horse

We came across this fine fellow on one of our rides. I love the little bit of grass still hanging from his mouth when he looked up to see what was going on.

Eagle on a Fence

I captured this eagle on an old piling fence along the bay at Birch Bay, WA. We had seen him swoop down and catch a fish as I was taking photos of Canada Geese nearby. We followed him in the car, as he flew down the edge of the bay and lit on this fence with his fish.

We pulled up and I was able to get this one shot of him before he decided to fly up to the top of a tree to feast on his fish. I'm happy with the one quick shot.

Barn Charm -

Driving through Eastern Washington we came upon this barn, with the wonderful sign painted on it. It reminds us of times past when many barns were painted with advertising signs - bringing the farmer a little extra income.

Blue Monday - Let's Take The Bus

If you have the blues, this bus will certainly chase them away - with its sunshine on a bright blue "sky". We saw this bus parked in a quiet neighborhood one day and I just had to turn around and get a picture.

I think it is the most fun bus I've ever seen - it is sure to cheer everyone up.

Duck - Weekly Top Shot - # 18

There are a lot of Mallard Ducks in NW WA this time of year. Some migrate in and some stay the whole year. Some are very friendly and curious. They often come into our yard (and we are about 3 blocks from the ponds where they stay most of the time) and eat the birdseed that has fallen out of the feeders.

Seagull landing

One of my all time favorites to photograph is seagulls. Their feathers are amazing and they are so graceful. This was taken at Zuanich Park in Bellingham.

Your Sunday Best - Heron

Birch Bay is very shallow, almost all the way across, and provides an excellent food source for herons. I've gotten almost all my shots of herons in this area. We were up that way at sunset one evening and the colors of the sunset reflected in the shallow waters.
We had to turn around and find a spot to park on the busy road. Fortunately there was a nice pull-out right next to the heron - and there as also a flock of ducks nearby - that's for another post.

Another car pulled in and a lady got out - just as two bald eagles were passing overhead to land in the nearby trees. She looked at the heron, looked at my and my cameras and asked if I'd seen any shorebirds. I said there were some down the road in a different bay and she rushed back to her car saying, "Herons you can see any day, but shorebirds, not that's interesting." We spent another hour there, getting shots of the ducks and herons until the sun began to fade. I hope she found her shorebirds and enjoyed them - we certainly enjoyed the heron.

As the sun began to set the colors reflected in the water gave a fabulous background for the heron in its search for food.

Bald Eagle - Weekly Top Shot - Week# 17

Bald eagles are plentiful in NW WA this time of year. They have just returned from the rivers where they winter, and are beginning to build and clean up their nests. On a ride today up towards Blaine, on the border with Canada, we saw approximately 30 eagles, some flying and many sitting in the trees. I spent over half an hour waiting to get this shot - the eagle kept turning its head away from the camera. My patience paid off.
